The Adjacent Possible

  • What is “the adjacent possible?”

Life often unfolds as a series of adjacencies—or small steps on the edge of our comfort zone. These adjacencies create possibilities for growth and transformation. By exploring incremental steps within, and at the edge of, an existing environment, innovators can fuel meaningful change.

At The Adjacent Possible, we work with you to explore what is possible at the edge of current research and practice. We take time to understand your needs and circumstances and provide you with the best possible products and services to advance your work within and beyond the current environment. What might we do together to explore the adjacent possible to innovate and improve lives?

  • Innovate to improve lives

In addition to traditional evaluation methods, we use an innovative framework and process model called Learn, Innovate, Improve or LI2. Our founder, Dr. Michelle Derr, led the development of LI2 and The Adjacent Possible has used the model with great success in partnership with researchers and practitioners across the nation. We use LI2 to cultivate partnerships between research and practice that advance evidence and improve lives.

  • Who we serve

At the Adjacent Possible, we work with clients who are interested in advancing research and practice and exploring innovative possibilities beyond the status quo to fuel meaningful change. We serve researchers, policymakers, government agencies, nonprofits, service providers, school districts, educators, technical assistance providers, and others.
